Grant Case studies

The main kind of project we like to support preserves the structure of our wonderful wealth of churches and chapels.  In the recent past we have given grants to repairs the roof at Wickham Skeith, the tower at Chediston, the porch and roof turrets at Clare, roof repairs at Botesdale Methodist chapel,  and re-thatching at Theberton but these are only a few of the many places of worship we have been able to help.

The following are a more detailed example of the kind of problems that can be faced and typical of the type of project that meets the criteria for a grant from Suffolk Historic Churches Trust.

The Bury St. Edmunds Quaker (Friends) Meeting House


The beautiful Georgian Meeting House was built in 1750 and is a Grade ll listed building situated in the heart of Bury St. Edmunds.  In 2003 it became clear that extensive repairs were needed to protect the timber frame and carry out urgent repairs to the lath and plaster render.

St. Lawrence, Lackford

St. Lawrence is a significant medieval structure, largely in the ‘Decorated’ style, which had an extensive restoration in the 1860’s.  When scaffolding was put up to re-decorate the lath and plaster ceiling it was discovered that the ancient roof rafters were greatly distressed, there were breaks in the joints and the whole structure was sagging inwards. The condition was so serious that the church had immediately to be closed for use. Re-decoration had turned into a major and urgent re-roofing project.
