Chairman's Message

Welcome to our new website.

We wanted to tell you more about the Trust and how you could get involved by taking part in the annual Suffolk Historic Churches Trust Bike Ride, by attending one of our events or by becoming a Friend of the Trust. The idea is to include lots of photos and information about how the Trust is helping churches, chapels and meeting houses across Suffolk.

We had a busy year in 2009 with grants of £ 215,250 being awarded to 46 churches in the financial year ending 5 April 2009 and £166,325 was raised by cyclists and walkers who took part in the annual Suffolk Historic Churches Bike Ride on 12th September 2009.  (More details can be viewed on this website of course!). We hope this year will be even busier.

Suffolk has around 500 historic medieval churches, and our towns and villages would look and feel very different without their spires and towers reaching up into wide Suffolk skies. In addition there are the non-conformist churches, meeting houses and catholic churches which are also a crucial part of the history of our county, fostering a sense of community and acting as a magnet for tourists, so helping our local economy.

If you know a community working to preserve a local place of worship, of any denomination or age, do encourage them to get in touch with us, and if you would be interested in helping with our work we would love to hear from you.

Robert Rous, Chairman of the Trustees
