Sponsored Bike Ride

The Sponsored Bike Ride 2010:  Healthy and Green challenge announced!

Two of Suffolk's leading partnership groups are engaging in some friendly rivalry to encourage us to go for a bike ride and at the same time, help preserve a Suffolk church or chapel.

Cyclists from Healthy Ambitions Suffolk and Creating the Greenest County assembled at St Mary’s Church, Bramford  on Thursday 8 July  to launch this year’s SHCT Bike Ride to the press. Bike Ride chairman, Patrick Grieve also appeared on BBC Radio Suffolk's breakfast show.

A team of riders from Healthy Ambitions Suffolk and a team from Creating the Greenest County are planning their routes for the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust Annual Sponsored Bike Ride and will be collecting sponsorship from family, friends and work colleagues.

Sally Hogg, Deputy Director Partnerships and Engagement and one of the project leaders behind Healthy Ambitions Suffolk, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting the Suffolk Historic Churches bike ride.

“The fun event gives everyone the perfect opportunity to get active and enjoy Suffolk's beautiful countryside and picturesque towns while also raising money for charity. What’s more, the ride is suitable for anyone, regardless of their age or fitness, as everyone can take it at their own pace.

“We’re really looking forward to taking on the Greenest County team, and hope that some friendly rivalry will give us added motivation on the big day!”

Cllr Judy Terry, Portfolio Holder for Greenest County says ‘This is a great fun day out for all the family, and I wish the Greenest County team the best of luck. If anyone hasn't got a bike, remember that Genesis in Holywells Park, Ipswich, refurbish bikes for sale and hire at very reasonable prices - so support them, and enjoy the ride. Cycling through the countryside enables you to see so much more."

People across Suffolk are now also invited to apply to take part in the bike ride where cyclists include local history lovers, keen cyclists, church supporters and those who just fancy a ride in the lanes of Suffolk

“Regular riders will know what good fun the day is, meeting other cyclists and walkers around the county’s churches – but it’s good to know the event gets a healthy and a “green” seal of approval too!” said Patrick Grieve, chairman of the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust Bike Ride.

The Annual Sponsored Bike Ride is a National event (in some counties known as "Ride and Stride") and every second Saturday in September cyclists all round the Country are out making money for their local County Churches Trust. This years ride will be on Saturday 11 September.

The idea started in Suffolk, and consistently Suffolk has headed the table of funds raised. The Bike Ride is the main source of income to Suffolk Historic Churches Trust to enable it to make grants to churches and chapels of all denominations towards repair and restoration costs.

The ride is run entirely by volunteers and is inter-denominational with cyclists  invited to seek sponsors who will undertake to pay an agreed sum of money for each place of worship visited by the cyclist between 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. on the Bike Ride Day. The money raised by each participant is shared equally between the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust and the place of worship nominated by the cyclist.

As important as the cyclists, are the many volunteers who give up the day to man the churches and chapels and sign in the cyclists as they arrive. Hundreds of places of worship are manned during the day and that takes quite a team of volunteers! It is a real community effort that is the lifeblood of the Trust.

We need your help to raise the much needed funds to carry forward the work of the Trust. Suffolk has been split into a number of areas, and is organised parish by parish through the Bike Ride Area Organisers  (each looked after by a local Bike Ride Co-ordinator).
