SHCT Bike Ride - from the Bike Ride Chairman

Every year on the second Saturday of September the Sponsored Bike Ride takes place. This popular event raises by far the greater part of the Trusts income, which is distributed in its entirety to the churches and chapels of Suffolk.

Last year we raised £166,390. Apart from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a few of the major churches, there is no government support for our ancient churches. The vast majority of these are maintained solely by the efforts of their parishes, many with dwindling and ageing congregations. These buildings are often the only remaining community facility in a rural area, a constant delight to visitors, a source of information and fascination to historians and family researchers, and even for those who do not go to church, places of tranquillity and inspiration.

What does the Bike Ride entail?
  • Contact the local organiser of the church you are supporting, or indeed any church, obtain the Sponsor Form and a list of churches open, and plan your route .
  • Persuade your family and friends to sponsor you, either per church or a simple donation .
  • Do as much or little as you like. People are generous and supportive, and sponsors know they are helping a fine cause.
  • You get to see inside a number of beautiful buildings and discover their treasures, pass fields and woods and hidden byways. It is marvellous exercise.
  • Having collected the funds from your sponsors, give it to the Local Organiser, who passes it on the Trust. Half goes straight to the church of your choice, the rest is given as grants to churches for repairs or renovation, on application.
Do join us. It is a good day out, and with any luck, the sun shines.

Patrick Grieve, Bike Ride Chairman.
